London's Science Museum has launched a bid to build a vast new museum on an abandoned Royal Air Force base at Wroughton, near Swindon.
At present, the site is used to store about 18,000 objects, many of which are too large to fit into the central London galleries. A further 200,000 smaller objects are stored in another facility in the west of the capital.
The museum can only display some 8% of its collection at one time.
The Wroughton site consists of six hangars.
