In pictures: Penicillin: The first 'wonder drug'

Dr Bud said it was essential to tackle the problem of drug resistance.

And he warned patients and medics had to use penicillin more sensibly.

The bid to understand the drug's make-up and how it functioned began early, as this molecular model from 1945 shows.

It will be featured in the exhibition, along with a 'penicillin lipstick' used as a protection against infection.
