Wader bird, Pompeii

The River Sarno flowed into the sea near where this fresco was painted in the garden room.

This species of wader was a familiar sight to the family which lived in the House of the Golden Bracelet, so called because a heavy gold bracelet was dug up there, together with a small hoard of gold and silver coins.

Until this unique Pompeian garden room was discovered 50 years ago, the only similar room from that period to have survived was one from the so-called House of Livia, near Rome.
