The US companies decided that they could make more money by selling sports utility vehicles, built on a truck chassis.

In the 1990s sales of SUVs and minivans soared.

Imported SUVs attracted a higher tariff rate, blocking Japanese rivals.

They were not very fuel-efficient, but with oil prices at $18 a barrel, no one seemed to mind.
