Most news from Cuba stems from the capital, Havana. But what is life like outside the main city?
BBC Mundo correspondent Fernando Ravsberg visited five towns to interview five Cubans about their lives.
He visited Santa Clara in central Cuba, noted for its cultural life and more tolerant attitudes to gays.
Other stops included the Zapata Peninsula, site of the Bay of Pigs invasion and the tobacco-growing region of Pinar del Rio.
