Money has no use anymore in the rural areas.

And even if people do have money, they cannot spend it as there is hardly anything in rural shops where fridges are turned off and bare of their once-ubiquitous fizzy drinks. On the shelves, there is no soap, shoe polish, salt or maize meal.

There are bags of rice, but few can afford to buy them.
