Despite these achievements life is a struggle. It is not every day that the men succeed in bringing home enough fish for the family.

It is common to see women in the shallows corralling tiny fish into nets by beating the water.

Others spend back-breaking hours searching for clams, oysters and other molluscs at low tide.

To protect their skin they wear a white paste made from the bark of a local tree, which doubles as a sunscreen and moisturiser.
