Kenyan teacher Bi Swaffiya first came up with the idea of getting moderate Islam onto the syllabus as long as 20 years ago.

She says she consulted with scholars and Imams before founding what are called the Madrassa Resource Centres.

"It was important to present young people with an alternative to militant Islam that is presented in the media."
