Spiral of poverty

Some madrassas, or Islamic schools, in East Africa are seeking to redress the image that such schools promote extremism.

This change means Kenyan children like Fatima and Maryam benefit from a modern nursery education and can get sought-after places in primary schools.

It is starting to reverse the trend in areas around Mombasa where Muslims often fail in school and can fall into a spiral of poverty and, potentially, violence.
