As insecurity grew, more and more people left their villages seeking protection in their numbers.

"It was 1996, the rains had ended but the dry season hadn't yet started," recalls Mr Alengo. "At first people were suspicious about the location of the camp proposed by the government. We feared both the rebels and the government, you see.

"Then, we had no choice. Our people are hard workers - land was cleared, huts built - before long, 35,000 of us lived here."
