In Bouake Mr Coulibaly meets an old friend, Joseph Kouao - a southerner, and a history and geography teacher.

The southern government reassigned him to Bouake a few months ago to teach in a secondary school.

“I was nervous, and the people here were suspicious of me, they thought I was a spy for President Gbagbo,” he confides.

“Everything is fine now but the war has really lowered educational standards. Ivory Coast will suffer from this for years to come.”
