In pictures: Growing khat
Green gold

The origin of the khat tree is unclear among the Meru community who live in eastern Kenya.

Buds of the tree, the "miraa" variety, which are chewed as stimulants have had a high profile in their lives. A man had to deliver a bunch of them to his in-laws for his marriage proposal to be accepted.

The tree now known as the "Green Gold of Meru" is a key source of income to thousands of families.
