International conservationists have taken advantage of the ceasefire to establish study centres on the boundary of the park.

Rob Muir, a British conservationist working with the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), is leading efforts to increase the monitoring of gorillas and research into their behaviour in the park.

Funding, via groups like Wildlife Direct, helps support their efforts and the poorly resourced rangers.
