By the early 1980s, Britons were already making more than 20 million overseas trips each year.

Following the model of the US no-frills carriers, budget airlines like Ryanair helped drive passenger numbers even higher in the 1990s.

Increasingly, a foreign holiday was no longer seen as an annual treat, but something that it was possible to enjoy several times a year.

In 2004 Britons made 64 million trips abroad, leaving beaches like Margate, on an overcast day, rather empty.
