In pictures: South Asia's slow recovery from the tsunami

On Malacca beach on Car Nicobar Island, local fishermen carry a traditional canoe out to sea. The Nicobarese practice subsistence - as opposed to commercial - fishing. Except for a boat or two on the water, the beaches are completely devoid of activity.

Nearby this beach is government housing which was destroyed by the earthquake and waves. The saltwater that came in at that time has remained, with stagnant water providing a perfect breeding ground for malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
