Making observations

Astronomers can make observations at the VLT in two ways. The first is to visit the VLT in person and work with a staff astronomer overnight.

"This is really good for projects where you are not absolutely sure what you are looking for," says Olivier Hainaut. "They can adjust their strategy; drop an object from their observations or stay longer on something else."

VLT specialists usually stay with visitors throughout the night to assist them.
