Peter still keeps with tradition by hand-cutting peat, which is burned on the fire in the house.
Their home is a mix of old and new, with an extension to one of the original crofthouses added on. The ruined house in which Alex’s grandfather was born still remains on the croft.
The new part was built with practical help from Alex’s dad, and grants and loans from the Crofters Commission. Unless they buy then de-croft part of the land, crofters cannot get mortgages due to their tenant status.
