Photo journal: Life on a croft
Common grazing

As well as working dogs, the croft has 22 cattle and about 170 sheep, plus Shetland ducks and several pets.

A small amount of arable land is cultivated, growing vegetables and fruit, and kale for livestock. The rest found in sections spread around the township of Aith is used for common grazing by all the local crofters.

Although crofting in Shetland is relatively healthy, only 11 people now live in Aith, compared with about 80 at the beginning of the 20th century.
