Photo journal: Life on a croft
Past, present, future

Some crofts lie abandoned, or have been decrofted, in Scotland, but efforts are ongoing to preserve the tradition, for environmental as well as historical reasons.

"While farmers are individualists, crofting is about community. Between kinfolk and friends we have all the skills we need here.

"It can be a burden physically and mentally, but I hate the sight of an empty byre," says Peter.

"You’re part of crofting as much as it’s part of you. And when part of it dies, it gets to you."
