Access to free primary health care and dentistry – through the programme known as Barrio Adentro (Inside the Barrio) – is one of the most important improvements the residents here say they have experienced under President Chavez.

Most of the doctors and dentists here are Cubans who have moved to the barrio as part of a deal under which Cuba receives cheap oil.
