Photo journal: Life in a Caracas barrio

As the Venezuelan elections get closer, much attention is being paid to the shantytowns of Caracas, where many of President Hugo Chavez's core supporters live.

One of them is the Jose Felix Ribas barrio - perched on the eastern hillsides of Caracas it is said to be one of the largest in Latin America.

An estimated 120,000 people live here in an area of 96 hectares (237 acres) most of them in the rickety houses known as ranchos they have built for themselves.
