The Russian veterans included the legendary "great five", of Vyacheslav Fetisov, Alexei Kasatonov, Igor Larionov, Vladimir Krutov and Sergei Makarov, along with renowned goalkeeper Vladislav Tretyak.

They formed the Soviet team 25 years ago. The match was also played on the 60th anniversary of the birth of Russian hockey, and the 50th anniversary of the USSR's first Olympic victory.
