London and his glamorous second wife Charmian roamed the streets for hours interviewing people and taking pictures.

Charmianís notes taken at the time are also being exhibited. One entry for 18 April begins in red: "Earthquake", and continues: "Mate [Jack] and I spent night in burning streets," she wrote, "terrific experience. Napped on a doorstep til dawn."

Londonís account for Collierís magazine is regarded as a masterpiece of journalism.
