The festival is also an opportunity to showcase different cultures as it brings together students from across Kenya and over the past 60 years has been seen as an important way to preserve traditions.

“Most of the things on TV are from abroad,” says Kevin Asalo, who is studying to become a teacher.

“But at the festival, no matter what the theme of the dance, play or narrative, it has to be woven within the context of our oral literature.”
