In pictures: South African mothers with cameras

Thembisa lives with her two children, a seven-year-old daughter and a five-month-old son, in a shack with neither water nor electricity. Her daughter is also HIV-positive and needs oxygen for her treatment. The hospital gave her some to take home but because they don’t have electricity it cannot be used. Instead she takes some tablets.

When her daughter needs the toilet Thembisa digs a hole for her and then covers it up.
