In pictures: Seeking DR Congo's wildlife

Apart from farming, timber and trading, the only source of income is mining for tin ore (cassiterite) left by mining companies that operated in the massif at the end of the colonial era nearly 60 years ago.

These miners work for themselves, like many others across eastern DR Congo.

The work is tough and dangerous but some people come from as far away as Kinshasa to earn a small income.
