In pictures: Seeking DR Congo's wildlife

The mountain forests of the Itombwe Massif, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo were once home to a huge variety of wildlife.

Elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees and many different species of birds - such as this regal sunbird.

But for the past decade, the area has become home to a host of armed groups, fighting each other and killing, raping and robbing the local population.

It is feared that animals have also suffered, so a team of scientists went to find out what was left.
