The outbuildings as they are today on the left is the thatched cottage where Mr Mandela lived, in the guise of a servant. His wife, Winnie, visited him occasionally, taking circuitous routes to throw the police off her trial as she journeyed from her home in Soweto, on the other side of the city.

"Ironically, we had more privacy at Liliesleaf than we ever had at home," Mr Mandela wrote in his autobiography.
