In pictures: Mandela's farmhouse hide-out
Liliesleaf in 1963

Liliesleaf farm as it was when Nelson Mandela lived there. His home was the thatched cottage visible on the extreme left and towards the top of this photo.

A lightning conductor is faintly visible behind the house on the left, near the parked van. When they raided the farm, the police thought the lightning mast was an antenna for the ANC's Radio Freedom.

They believed the transmitter was hidden in a safe inside only when they blew open the safe did they realise they were wrong.
