Thatch

The majority of the schools are built from branches and reeds by local villagers.

Mr Koroma, headteacher at Mafollatha School, keeps a watchful eye on the precarious state of his school. Every year they spend three weeks replacing the thatched roof damaged by the rain season.

The past rain season lasted two months longer than usual and he is worried that they'll have to replace it again. "How am I supposed to teach children here?" he asks. "There is no water, no toilets and we need more blackboards. We need help to build a better school."
