In pictures: Conflict in Darfur
Rebel force

The Darfur conflict dates back to 2003, when rebel groups including the Sudanese Liberation Army (SLA) took up arms against Sudanese government forces.

The SLA remains in control of parts of Darfur, despite the campaign by government and the Janjaweed militia to defeat it by force. One faction of the SLA has signed up to a peace deal with the Sudanese government.
