Water is funnelled into small ponds to provide drinking water for cattle. But despite these measures, they are still dying in large numbers.
"At least 100 or 200 cattle die in this village from drought every year," says Omar. "When you think a cow is worth 100,000 CFA ($195) and a sheep 20,000 CFA ($40), it's easy to see why my people are so poor."
Omar used to own cattle himself but one summer they all died. It was then he decided to leave the village to secure his family's future.
