Photo journal: Burkina Faso cotton farmer
US visit

"Last year, I visited an American farmer called Terry Pepper in Texas.

I was struck by the sheer magnitude of the farms. American farmers can cope with such huge farms because, unlike Burkinabe farmers, they use heavy duty equipment to sow seeds, plough the land and harvest their crop.

They also have very sophisticated irrigation systems.

For them, labour is expensive whereas in Burkina, agriculture provides the incomes for many families."
