Photo journal: Burkina Faso cotton farmer
Step forward

Francois Traore is the leader of the cotton farmers in Burkina Faso - a poor country in West Africa.

He and the members of his Aproca association are among those hoping to benefit when the United States ends its export subsidies to its own cotton farmers, which have been ruled illegal by the World Trade Organisation.

"This is an important step forward but not the end of our struggle. The subsidies will not stop until the end of 2006 and US farmers will still get other subsidies."
