"I had problems finding a job. I then decided to join the war," Andrew Gengezha said.

"Britain was helping us to keep Germany from attacking Africa. The Germans surrendered after a fierce battle with Britian and its allies.

"I got hurt - I tried to throw a grenade but it exploded just before me and I lost my eye. They gave me a meagre send-off. Imagine, just £10.

"I tried to apply for compensation from the British but they kept telling me to wait up until today."
