In pictures: Villagers' Barefoot College
Natural system

More than education, people here needed water. The Barefoot College first took the regular approach of digging wells and hand-pumps but soon saw them run dry. It then set up a system of diverting rainwater to dry wells. By a natural system of percolation this brought clean water back through hand-pumps. Rainwater flowing down gutters from roofs is trapped in underground tanks.
