As part of the BBC's India Week, the BBC News website spoke to people across India who were pushing the boundaries of their chosen field.
In 1983 Mira Kalbag founded Vigyan Ashram with her late husband Dr Srinath Kalbag. It's a vocational school for children who drop out of conventional education.
"My husband thought that if education was related to everyday life, children would be interested. Working with your hands stimulates your mind. That's how the idea came to him."
