In pictures: Death stalks birth in Afghanistan
Care scarce

There is only one maternity hospital in Badakhshan province, in north-eastern Afghanistan a large area with a population of about 1 million. The hospital has just 20 beds.

The lack of health care is one of the main reasons why, in this region, almost one in 10 mothers die as a result of childbirth the highest recorded rate of maternal mortality in the world.
