In pictures: Bridging Kashmir divide

The Jhelum river runs along the Line of Control, dividing Indian- and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir.

In places, just a few hundred metres divide the people living on either side.

Many families would gather and wave to relatives and friends on the other bank.

Some even floated messages to their loved ones. But crossing the river was out of the question – the banks on either side were heavily mined.
