Ballroom dancing is still big business in Russia with dance contests often shown on prime-time national television.

In Soviet times, ballroom dancing was not prohibited but was often frowned upon and regarded as ‘bourgeois’ and associated with so-called dangerous influences such as rock’n’roll and even hooliganism.

Today, Latin, Swing and Jive are back and more popular than ever before.

Here a group of young dancers wait to be called for the final in the All Russia Championships 2005.
