Photo journal: Postcards from Russia - Part II
Beslan, North Ossetia, Caucasus

In September 2004, Chechen separatists from Ingushetia attacked a school in Beslan, North Ossetia, where they took more than 1,100 people hostage.

The siege ended after three days in a battle between Russian security forces and Chechen rebels that left 330 people, half of them children, dead.

Today the school stands as a stark memorial to those who lost their lives in this horrific terrorist attack.
