The curative powers of the Caucasus fresh water springs have attracted Russians ever since the 18th century.

The area, known as Kavkazskie Mineralnye Vody (Caucasus Mineral Water), is an old-fashioned tourist centre, with elegant but decaying spa buildings offering treatments believed to benefit disorders of the muscles, bones, heart, nervous system and skin.

Here, a male patient is undergoing oxygen therapy, designed to clear and stimulate the mind.
