The Russian Orthodox Church originated at the end of the 10th century and for many years was the dominant faith of the Russian people and State.

Until, in the early twentieth century, Atheism became the new ‘religion’ as the Communist ideology denied the existence of God and destroyed thousands of churches.

Today the Orthodox Church is enjoying a tentative revival, although the traditional twice-daily services are attended mainly by pensioners.
