From July 1942, when the German army besieged the city of Stalingrad, to February 1943 when the Soviet army captured the last remaining German soldier, the two sides fought a bitter and fervent battle.

Over a million troops are believed to have died. Whilst the Soviet victory is still considered by many to be the ultimate emblem of Russia’s courageousness, these days this imposing statue of Mother Russia is more popular as a summer time spot to stroll around, chat and be photographed.
