Kirovsk, Northern European Russia

Although the Bolsheviks adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1917, the Russian Orthodox Church still uses the Julian calendar for its holidays.

In Kirovsk, 100km south of Murmansk, an illuminated sign hangs above the town’s statue of Lenin. Winter in Northern European Russia finds the region shrouded in darkness nearly 24 hours a day.
