Jose's wife calls twice a month to ask about the children and report back on life in Madrid.

"She tells me most of the Spanish people are very impolite," he says. "She misses home a lot, especially the food. In Spain there is no heavy soup – it's just vegetables.

"When she calls she always says: 'Please come to Spain.' I tell her: 'If I go now, who will look after my bees?'"

Jose will only go himself when his wife returns.
