In pictures: Solidarity in Poland:
Leader

On 14 August 1980, Lech Walesa illegally scaled the wall of the shipyard and became the leader of the strike.

He had been involved in promoting workers rights for many years. Several days after the strike, Mr Walesa was instrumental in persuading workers not to leave the shipyard - and to work with the wider public via a general strike in Poland.

Here supporters carry Walesa on their shoulders outside the Supreme Court at Warsaw on 10 February, 1981.
