"I do have a few good memories. One day me and another girl stole a member of staff’s cigarettes and tried smoking them. That was fun.

"But most of the time I didn’t like it. All the children of our age had to stick together, because the older children were like the staff, and also hit us – to show that they were more important, I suppose.

"Because I was one of the smarter ones, I also used to look after the little children and the ones who weren’t so smart."
