The institution

Nineteen-year-old Viorica has spent most of her life in one of Romania’s notorious state-run children’s homes.

After years at an institution in the town of Siret – which was meant for disabled children but in fact housed children of widely ranging abilities – she is now trying to carve out a life of her own.

"This is where I grew up. My life was really hard - there were 30 children in each room, and sometimes as many as five of us in each bed."
