In pictures: Aborigines in the outback
Regaining lost culture

Students in grade 5 at the Toomelah primary school make book covers with Aboriginal designs and motifs.

In the past, Aborigines were not allowed to speak their languages, as part of a government attempt to "civilise" them.

But after Justice Enfield's inquiry, they regained the confidence and incentive to learn the languages and arts of their ancestors.

Pre-school children are read books by teachers who are themselves students of their own past.
